With the release of iOS 17, Apple’s Safari web browser now has the ability to automatically remove tracking parameters from URLs when using Private Browsing Mode. This new feature, known as Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection, ensures that cross-website tracking is prevented. When Safari detects a tracking parameter while browsing or copying a link, it removes the identifying parts of the URL while keeping the rest intact.

While the links will still function properly, they won’t contain unique identifiers, as reported by MacRumors. Notably, this feature extends beyond Safari and also works in the Messages and Mail apps. Furthermore, you can enable it for regular browsing in Safari as well. Here’s how:

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings, tap on Safari, then select Advanced.
  2. Choose Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection.
  3. You can set it to “All Browsing” to enable the feature.
  4. If you prefer not to use this feature, you can also turn it off in the same menu.

Please keep in mind that iOS 17 is set to be released later this year and is currently available in beta for users with an Apple developer account. Regular iPhone users will have to wait for the official rollout of the latest iOS later this year to access this feature.

During a WWDC 2023 developer video session, Apple showcased an example demonstrating the removal of tracking parameters from a URL. The initial URL contained a specific “click_id” parameter, which advertisers typically use to track a user’s actions on different websites. However, Safari automatically eliminates this parameter from the URL to protect user privacy.

In addition to this tracking parameter removal feature, iOS 17 also introduces the Screen Distance feature. This feature alerts users when they hold an iPhone too close to their eyes for an extended period, aiming to lower the risk of nearsightedness in children and reduce overall eye strain. You can enable the Screen Distance feature in the Settings app under Screen Time > Screen Distance. It is available on all iPhone models with Face ID.
